We got in touch with SMEET's CEO, Sure V Satyanarayana for his insights into the Qatari construction market, the country's 2018 budget allocations and what they'll be showcasing at Building Services Qatar 2018.
Q&A with Sure V. Satyanarayana - CEO of SMEET
What is the major trend in the Qatari construction market to look for in 2018?
As Qatar prepares itself for the FIFA World Cup 2022 and in order to meet it's National Vision 2030, the country is investing heavily in developing infrastructure and construction projects, with USD 220+ billion to be invested in new roads, stadiums, facilities, and numerous major projects including hotels, leisure, and recreation in the planning or construction phase.
We can also see that oil prices are stabilizing and there is a positive trend towards rebalancing as demand rises and production slows around the world. Hence, Real Estate growth in Qatar is expecting significant growth, due to an increase in construction activity in terms of infrastructure and real estate.
The strategy of Qata Tourism Authority (QTA) is to increase the volume of tourist inflow launched under 'Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030' will boost the economy as well as small and medium sized enterprises.
Also, Qatar is now trying to diversify away from oil and investigating heavily in non-oil infrastructure by encouraging to establish/improve all kind of manufacturing to meet domestic requirements. For example, Baladna Farm's dairy production will reach the level sufficiency to meet total domestic dairy needs of Qatar as well as fish farming projects in floating cages in the sea in the country are likely to make the country self sufficiant in the coming days.
What impact will the 2018 Qatari Government budget allocation have on the local construction sector? How will these investments benefit the local businesses?
The Transportation and other infrastructure projects were assigned the largest share in the 2018 budget with allocations of QR42.0 Billion, 21% of total expenditure. The main projects include The Metro, Lusail Light Train, Al Bustan Highway, Orbiter Expressway, Al Rayyan/ Dhukan road, Al Khor Coatal Road, Expansions in the water and electricity networks and Development on Infrastructure in existing areas.
The construction industry plays a very important role in achieving infrastructure development and Qatari Government's plan to support local companies will boost many of the Qatari owned construction companies.
The Qatari Covernment's initial plan is diversifying the economy and funding construction projects towards non-oil sectors over the forecasted period. That way, Qatari Government aims to support economic growth, expand local construction sector and continue with the flagship programmes independant from volatile oil prices. In addition to that, recent developments in transportation (roads, infrastructures as well as Doha Metro) will enhance local connectivity, support the industry's growth and benefit local businesses.
Qatar's 2018 stat budget will focus on developing local industries and the private sector as the country works to make itself self-sufficient. 2018 budget also focuses on supporting food security projects, small and medium enterprises and the development of infrastructure in economic and free-trade zones.
The Qatari Government's plan to increase the country's energy production is also expected to support investments in energy infrastructure projects over the forecast period.
